Rather than being an issue of not TEACHING civic responsibility, I wonder if the problem is that we're not giving kids the opportunities to ENGAGE in civic responsibility from an early age. Perhaps teaching civic responsibility through being actively involved in a community on a regular basis would encourage different results than reading about civics in a textbook...
This is my 33rd year in education. Prior to beginning at Luther, I was an elementary teacher, guidance counselor and principal. My wife, Jane, works as a media specialist in the North Winneshiek and Decorah Schools. My oldest son, Nathan, is a graduate student at UCLA and my youngest son, Ben, is a senior at St. Olaf College.
