Radically Changing Education?

Radically Changing Education

Click on "Radically Changing Education" and watch the video clip about how the speaker believes we need to radically change what we value/teach in schools. I was especially taken by his idea about how if all insects died tomorrow humans and the planet as a whole wouldn't last long. If all humans died tomorrow, the planet would flourish. We do need to think about what that means and what it means for teaching and learning. Somehow, we don't seem to "get it." Will look forward to your reactions since our cooperative learning activity tomorrow will center around this clip.

Thank you Jim for sharing this video about creativity.
All I could think about during this clip were the teachers that labeled Andrew and tried to break his personality/spirit when he was a young fidgety student. Yes, he was tested and retested for LD and HDAD because he wasn't the perfect quiet boy. Fortunately, Andrew didn't fit into any category for LD and he wasn't medicated. And now, 7 years later he is a B student with a healthy self-esteem and a bright future.
I think I know why teachers try to label and medicate kids. It's the easy way out in our current educational system. Most teachers only want the mild mannered, cooperative, quiet, dutiful students that learn through reading, reading and more reading.
My hope is that "new teachers" encourage the strengths in each child and accept them for the person they are. Teacher and or parents can't change a child's personality to be a robot like perfect kid.
Ken Robinson had many insightful ideas and hopes for the future of education.
Thanks again.
P.S. I will share this video with a few teacher friends.
